Vision Seekers Youth Art Workshop
The Vision Seekers Youth Art Workshop is this Saturday, July 9 from 8:30am to 3pm at the Jacklin Arts Center.  This event is one of several of the Julyamsh, which is said to be the largest PowWow in the northwest.  The Jackin Arts Center is  pleased to host this interactive arts education retreat for our local youth to experience native American art and culture from internationally known American Indian artists.

Press Release - Efforts to promote a college-going culture are paying off. Information from The BERC Group’s College Tracking Data Services shows that the number of SPS students going to either a two-year or four-year college in the year after graduating from high school has increased by about 12 percent since 2004. The most recent data, for the class of 2009, shows that 64.2 percent attended college right after graduation. Throughout the state of Washington, 59.4 percent of the class of 2009 went directly on to college.

Crowning Achievement

A Spokane woman fell just short of being crowned 2011 Miss Washington. Genay Tucker, who was competing as Miss Spokane, finished third in the scholarship pageant over the weekend. Tucker was previously Miss Washington outstanding teen in 2007 after winning the Miss Greater Vancouver outstanding teen the same year. Brittney Henrey, 24, of Edgewood in Pierce County will represent the state in January at the Miss America 2012 pageant in Las Vegas.

The City of Spokane is working to help people better understand the new water rate structure.

In years past the people who used more water got a bulk rate and paid less per gallon, that way if you had a large yard you could water with out fear of a huge water bill.

But now the city wants you to think twice before you turn on those sprinklers. The more water you use, the more per gallon you'll pay.

Underaged Drunk Driver Hits House

An alleged drunk driver is in trouble with police.  Police said the driver hit a home on the 4100 block of East Fourth Avenue in Spokane.

They said the man was not old enough to drink.  Authorities said he failed to drive around a corner and hit the front of a house Friday morning.

The driver was taken into custody and received minor injuries.  No one inside of the house was injured.

Early Morning House Fire Damages Home

Firefighters responded to a house fire late Thursday night on the 300 block of South Ray.

When crews arrived they found the back of the home on fire.  Investigators say a power line that had fallen next to the home could have started it.

Damage to the home forced two people living there to get help from the Red Cross.
