Grab the girls and hit the spa and beauty show

Grab the girls and hit the spa and beauty show

It's the “perfect girl's day out destination.”

The 8th annual Health and Beauty Spa Show opens Saturday at the Spokane Community College Lair, and event manager Rachel Swanson says it should be a great time for any woman looking to pamper herself.

“Women can come in and get over the winter blahs,” she said. “We just want to make you feel more beautiful and glam. This is a feel-good show.”

The event will have 98 booths with about 90 vendors. There will be all sorts of health and beauty products for sale and for sample. From skin care to clothing, from scarves to jewelry.

A portion of the proceeds goes to the YWCA women's shelter. Your ticket will be discounted if you donate a canned food or hygiene item.

There will also be a Before and After contest.

“Come in all ratty, get done up, and then everybody will vote and the winner will get a night's stay at Bonneville Hot Springs Resort and Spa,” according to Swanson.

Young Spokane designer headed to Fashion Week

You may have heard the saying the one man's trash is another man's treasure. One Spokane designer is using that phrase to make clothes out of reuseable materials.

Rachel Mace is only 22 but she's getting ready to show her designs in one of the biggest fashion events in the United States, New York's Fashion Week.

"Fashion Week is the biggest event in fashion in our continent," said Mace.

Fashion Week is known by designers and fashion enthusiasts everywhere as one of the "must attend" events. In fact big names such as Donna Karan and Chanel show their pieces at this event while stars like Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Heidi Klum attend their shows.

Although Rachel didn't have any formal training as a designer like others that will be at the event, she said she got her start when someone recognized her talent.

"I went to the store and bought some garbage bags, but when I home and realized I already had some. So I made a skirt out of the new ones," said Mace.

It was that decision to use reusable materials that helped her get her start.

Crowning Achievement

A Spokane woman fell just short of being crowned 2011 Miss Washington. Genay Tucker, who was competing as Miss Spokane, finished third in the scholarship pageant over the weekend. Tucker was previously Miss Washington outstanding teen in 2007 after winning the Miss Greater Vancouver outstanding teen the same year. Brittney Henrey, 24, of Edgewood in Pierce County will represent the state in January at the Miss America 2012 pageant in Las Vegas.

The Eyelash Extension Buzz

The Eyelash Extension Buzz

As a woman with relatively wimpy eyelashes, I had to get in on a new trend sweeping Spokane... eye lash extensions. Women I know who wear them, swear by them. They make your lashes longer, thicker and eliminate the need for mascara. No mascara? Thicker, longer lashes? I had to try it.

You wouldn't notice Eileen Frances' Beautiful Lashes storefront from the street. I didn't. I drove right by it.
